Tips for a Stress-Free Home Renovation

How to Keep Rodents out of the Home While Renovating

Home renovations are exciting when you’re dreaming about the finished result, but can be a little stressful as the walls come tumbling down. Even small tasks like putting shelves up are messy at best, and can soon become a nightmare if you drill into a pipe or cable.

While a little mess can’t be helped, bigger problems can easily be avoided when you have a few tricks up your sleeve. So check out our 8 tips for a stress-free home renovation.

Make a Daily Plan

Discuss your renovation project with your contractors, and form a daily battle plan based on it. This will give you a better idea on how long the project will take, and what to expect each day. Remember that any renovation starts before the contractors arrive on site, so make sure to set aside a day or two for clearing out the rooms, as well as cleaning. Also, don’t forget to set aside some time for yourself. Decide on how many hours you will spend on the renovating project each day, and once you’ve reached your quota, set everything aside, and spend some time with your partner or family instead.

Store Belongings Off-Site

From furniture to clothing and cooking utensils, your belongings will need to be cleared out before the renovation starts. Not only will they not get in the way of workers, but you won’t have to worry about them being covered in dust and paint, or worse, damaged by accident. If the budget allows it, look into renting a storage unit short-term. Otherwise, check with friends and family to see if they can keep them for you.

Keep Track of Your Budget

Money can be a real source of stress when it comes to renovation, especially if you come across unexpected expenses. To avoid this, make sure that you and your partner are on the same page when it comes to how much to spend, and on what. It also pays off to have some money set aside, in case the project may take longer than expected.

Create Some Space for Yourself

Moving out while work takes place in your home is an ideal way to eliminate renovation-stress. However, with travel restrictions, this may not be possible. So before the project starts, designate a part of your house that you can retreat to, such as a spare room that doesn’t need renovating. This way, you can carry on with your daily routine even if workers are around, which is essential especially if you’re working from home.

Order Take-Out Meals

Even if you’re not doing the work yourself, renovations can be tiring, and there’s a good chance you won’t be in the mood for cooking at the end of the day. Also, preparing a meal can be a real challenge if your kitchen is dismantled and packed away in boxes. Take-out meals can be a real lifesaver, and it also gives you a chance to catch your breath, and prepare for the next stage of the renovation tomorrow.

Be Mindful of the Neighbors

When renovating, the last thing you’ll want is to have your neighbors come over to complain about the noise. So if you expect your project to be particularly loud, it’s best to let them know in advance. Tell them how long the renovation is expected to last, and if you come across any issues or delays, make sure they know it’s something that you’re trying to resolve as best you can. This way, they too can prepare for any disturbance, and you will build good relationships with those who live next door.

Get Out of the House

Renovations are loud, messy and stressful. If you can’t take a holiday, or if you have to work from home with strangers drilling and hammering in the other room, this will only add to the feeling of stress and anxiety. Sometimes, the easiest way to maintain your sanity is to just get away from it all for a bit. Even if you just go for a walk for half an hour or so, a change of scenery can help you detach, and prepare you for tackling the project with new strength when you come back.

Be Flexible

You can make all the to-do lists you can think of, yet you can’t predict everything. And the sooner you make peace with the fact, the sooner you’ll take a weight off your shoulders. It’s always best to overestimate costs when coming up with a budget, and time when making your initial plans. This way, you can be sure there’s a bit of a safety net in case of problems.
