Make the Most of the Holidays at Home

Selling a Home at the Holidays: 15 Decorating Tips

We were all hoping the holiday season was going to be spared the wrath of 2020. But it seems we’re going to have to buckle down for another round of social distancing instead. Rather than let this news get you down, why not embrace the change?

Without any travel or visitors, this year is the perfect opportunity to try out some new holiday traditions. Here are seven ways to make the most of the 2020 holiday season at home.

Go All Out with the Decorations

This is the year to bring extra sparkle, pile on the joy and add an abundance of holiday spirit. If you usually stop at a few tasteful ornaments, feel free to step up your decorating game this season. The bright lights and pretty colors might just bring a smile on our faces, and we could all use a little extra cheer this year.

Challenge your neighbors to a friendly lighting competition and see who can come up with the best display. You’ll have fun and bring a little joy to others in the neighborhood when you light up the night. And instead of decorating just the living room, why not spread the joy around? Try putting a tree in the bedroom or stringing lights up in the kitchen. A reason to smile when walking into a room is what we need right now!

Plan a Fabulous Breakfast

The morning of December 25 can be hectic. Make it a morning to remember with a fabulous festive breakfast. Plan ahead and find a recipe that you can make the day before and leave in the fridge overnight. Then in the morning you just have to pop it in the oven and sit back and enjoy your holiday!

Experience Another Culture

You’ve probably had many of the same holiday traditions your whole life. Since everything is so different this year, it’s the perfect opportunity to experience traditions from other cultures. Take the time to learn about how the holidays are celebrated in other countries and test out some of your favorite customs. You might just find some wonderful new traditions to incorporate into your annual celebrations.

Give Back

The spirit of giving is what the holidays are really all about. And after a year that’s been difficult for so many, giving back is more important than ever. There are many local charities you can donate to, but that’s not the only way to help out.

You can offer your time to a local shelter, drop off holiday baking to a lonely neighbor or give used toys to a family in need. No matter how small the act, giving back will make the holidays feel a bit more special

Change Up Your Holiday Dinner

If you’re having a smaller gathering this year, cooking a whole turkey might seem like a lot. Instead of baking a traditional holiday meal, why not treat your family to something different?  Skip the usual suspects and opt for a favorite dinner that you don’t get to have very often to make the meal extra special this year.

Get Outside

Since we can’t have indoor gatherings, this is the year to participate in outdoor events. Not only is time outdoors good for your physical and mental health, it also allows you to visit with friends and family safely. Many areas are offering outdoor drive-through events that you can share with your immediate family instead of a visit with Santa.

If you usually have neighbors over for drinks during the holidays, try meeting up for a socially distanced walk around the neighborhood instead. And rather than dinner with the extended family, invest in an outdoor fire pit and spend the afternoon around the fire. Ask each guest to bring a lawn chair, blanket and thermos of hot drinks, and you’ll have a safe and cozy way to spend time together.

Don’t Stress

After all we’ve been through in 2020, this is the year to let go of all things stressful and just enjoy the holidays. Relax, be in the moment and appreciate these times. Don’t worry if the decor is perfect or not, or if there are enough gifts. Simply knowing that you’ve made it through the year is more than enough for this holiday season!
